Kevin Savetz' Guide To Buying a Ridiculously Cheap PC
Microtel SYS4007

The Microtel SYSWM4007 is one of the variants in Microtel's line of budget desktop PCs. Like its SYSWM5017 cousin, the SYSWM4007 is powered by an AMD 1.5 GHz Sempron 2200+ processor with 3DNow! Technology. Although default RAM is 256MB, memory is expandable up 2 GB (though only one DIMM slot is available.) The Microtel SYSWM4007 has four USB ports and a floppy drive, while internal expansion is limited to only one PCI and one AGP slot.

Unlike the SYSWM5017 however, this model comes loaded with an OS and a gamut of software needed for web browsing and VOIP. The Xandros SurfSide Linux has a built-in firewall and anti-virus application.

Curiously, the SYSWM4007 comes installed with software for burning DVDs and CDs, even though the installed drive is a basic, 52x CD-ROM drive. Nonetheless, budget-conscious shoppers may find this package a good deal. Although cheaper by $10, it features almost the same hardware as the SYSWM5017, with bundled software thrown in.
